The original Wrong Turn had it’s moments, but the direct to DVD sequel surprisingly outshines it in almost every way. Wrong Turn 2: Dead End finds the pack of forest dwelling inbred cannibals stalking the cast and crew of a reality TV, Survivor-esque show. What results next contains the basic, somewhat predictable horror elements, but Wrong Turn 2 is so gleeful in it’s delivery that you’ll look past it’s shortcomings. The opening scene is worth the price of admission alone, the gore effects are surprisingly good and wonderfully grisly, and legendary Black Flag frontman and punk pioneer Henry Rollins heads a surprisingly decent cast that also includes Erica Leerhsen (the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake) and Daniella Alonso (who dealt with another group of inbred cannibals in the recent, and dreadful, Hills Have Eyes 2) as well. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and as long as you don’t either, you’ll have a blast with Wrong Turn 2. All in all, if you’re looking for a fun and gorey horror flick, you can do a lot worse than with what you get here.

Wrong Turn 2 was a pleasant surprise viewing!!! I love the star of the 1st Wrong Turn film, Eliza Dushku, BUT this sequel blows the 1st one away!!! The gore is awesome and the terror train keeps going from start to end on this one!!! The script is cool and features some familiar faces in the flick such as Henry Rollins (Punk Rock and Poet God) and “Erica” from Blair Witch 2 (and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake).

The effects are awesome. The gore is on high octane yet is superbly effective within the storyline. People are blown up, axed, gutted, shot with arrows–they’re even put through a grinder!! This family is more gruesome than both clans in the Hills have Eyes and the newer Texas CHainsaw Massacre Flicks!!!

This is a great gore horror flick to watch, with a decent story, acting and effects. If you love horror flicks, skip renting it and just buy it! It won’t disappoint!!

I think that when you take the longest Harry Potter book and turn it into the shortest Harry Potter film, that a large number of complaints by fans as to what has been cut will be inevitable after they watch “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Not that this means that the legions of fans will be bitterly disappointed by the film version, but rather that there will be regrets over not getting to see favorite scenes on the screen. For example, Quidditch is completely out of the film, denying Ron of his best moments in the sun (start singing “Weasley is our king”). So do not be surprised when your mind keeps shifting to what has been cut and distracting you from time to time while watching this summer’s latest blockbuster.

When last we left our hero, Harry fell victim to a trap to bring back Lord Voldermort, which cost Cedric Diggory his life. The Ministry of Magic wants things hushed up, but Dumbledore tells the students at Hogwarts that Diggory was murdered and Lord Voldermort murdered him. As this fifth film opens Harry and his wicked cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors. Harry uses his wand to defend them and is summarily expelled from Hogwarts for using magic in front of a muggle. The good news is that Harry gets reinstated, but the bad news is that the Ministry of Magic uses the opportunity to appoint Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary at the Ministry, as the school’s new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. However, Umbridge teaches only the theory and not the practice because she insists Harry is a liar and there is nothing the students need to learn to defend themselves from. Then things get progressively worse.

“The Order of the Phoenix” was the most maddening book to read, not because it was the longest, but because I detest Dolores Umbridge. As far as I am concerned she makes Voldermort look good, because he knows he is evil, wicked, bad, mean and nasty inside, while Umbridge thinks the ends justify the means. She is puritanical, sadistic and hypocritical. If there were not going to be children reading this review I would tell you what I really think of her. Suffice it to say, she makes me sick and I do not even take pleasure in loving to hate her, which is why my only requirement going into the film is that the Weasley Twins get their moment of glory when they become the disloyal opposition to the new order at Hogwarts.

Daniel Radcliffe continues to have the tote the heavy load in these films as Harry, with Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley being reduced more and more often to reaction shots while Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger remains the Mistress of Exposition in these films. Alan Rickman as Snape remains pitch perfect casting and Gary Oldman as Sirius Black is also a joy to watch, but I discovered in this film that I really like Michael Gambon’s performance as Dumbledore, mainly because he always plays up the character’s intelligence and I find I prefer his interpretation to that of the late Richard Harris, forgive my heresy. Imelda Staunton does not look as much like a toad as Umbridge does in the book, but she captures the character’s detestability from start to finish. We are always painfully aware how dangerous she is, whether she smiles or not. Also, Evanna Lynch steals more scenes as Luna Lovegood than Katie Leung does as Cho Chang, and it is certainly interesting to see Neville (Matthew Lewis) towering over everybody, with Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) in the silent but strong role for the pivotal sextet.

After seeing this film I raced home and got out my copy of the book and starting cataloguing things that had been cut. Such comparisons are, as I suggested up top, inevitable for anyone who has read the book. At this point what I missed the most were some of the conversations between Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall and Umbridge where Minerva verbally flaws the Inquisitor. The omission that I am focusing on the most is the whole bit about why Neville’s family was a target of Voldermort (I agree with Harry: always say his name and thereby reduce its power), since that suggests implications for what will happen in the final book, which gets released in just ten more days. I also would have liked to have seen an over reaction to Harry discovering his father bullied Snape at Hogwarts. My favorite part ends up being the impressive wizard’s duel between Voldermort and Dumbledore. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg does a good job of whittling down Rowling’s book and director David Yates does a competent job, but fans will simply want more. Also, we know what happens in the next book and all of the bad things that happen in this film cannot help but seem inconsequential in comparison. Plus, fans will be distracted by mining this film for clues as to what will happen in the last book.

I love Harry Potter, OK? So before you freak out, let me get that out of the way. The book version “Order of the Phoenix” was oustanding. I also think that previous directors have done pretty good to great jobs of translating the books to film (though I must say things went a little downhill once Chris Columbus left.)

All that being said, here’s the kicker:

The movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” played like a Cliff’s Notes adaptation of the book.

It lopped off a lot of the charm and romance and heartfelt pathos of the book— as well as a lot of the pure creative touches— in order to get the main arc of the story down. On top of that, it made “adaptations” to the book in order to get the story moving along— yet all these “compromises” were actually worse than what JK Rowling originally wrote!

Don’t believe me? Here is only SOME of what is wrong with this movie:

–Poor devlopment of the Harry/Cho Chang arc (The kiss is about all you get. No real feeling behind it at all. No devlopement of Harry’s crush. No final break up argument on Valentine’s Day.)

–Making Cho into an evil snitch (which is why she and Harry broke up in the movie.) In the movie SHE is the one who betrays Harry. Stupid.

–No hospital scenes. No meeting of Neville’s parents.

–Perfunctory explanation of Grimmaud Place

–Perfunctory development of Occlumency

–Harry gets to hear the prophecy while standing in the Department of Mysteries rather than later with Dumbledore. On top of this, he gets to hear the prophecy just by holding it in his hand. That makes no logical sense at all!

–The Department of Mysteries itself is compressed down into one room (the room with the prophecies.) All the cool rooms (with the blue lights, the 12 doors, the clocks, the brains, and so on) are all just ignored. Those were such tremendous inventions by JK Rowling–perhaps some of the most creative stuff in all the books– that I can’t believe they just cut them!

–The room with the arch is made into a really boring place.

–The battle scene is really short and rather stupid.

–Snape’s memory of being tortured by James Potter and his argument with Lily Potter is compressed into literally a total of 4 seconds of film. That scence is so PIVOTAL to the rest of the book series that I can’t believe they got away with not fully developing the scene.

On top of all these plot issues, the WORST part about this movie is that there was really no FEELING in it. The whole range of emotional arcs that are so well-developed in the book are done absolutely terribly in the movie. Yeah, Sirius dies. In the book, it is a devatating moment. In the movie, it’s like “Oh, well.” Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t have many moments together. There is no laughing in the movie. We don’t get to feel pathos for Neville because his parents are insane. We don’t get to feel the gratefulness of the Weasleys when Harry saves Mr Weasley. There are no lighthearted moments. Almost every scene except one or two that could have developed the emotional attachment we feel to the characters has been summarily excluded.

Like one other reviewer said: The movie is too short, yet it feels too long.

That is, sorry to say, a perfect description of a hack job.

I am quite disappointed.

This animated sequel to Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) is a very cute movie; very much at home on a video release, the animation and vocals are definitely above what you’d expect for a direct to video film. This tale begins where the first movie left off; Cruella de Vil is out on parole while her two flunkies are stuck in the slammer. She hooks up with a beatnik artist, Lars (voiced by Martin Short), who also likes spots. She hires him to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece just for her. Meanwhile, Anita (voiced by Jodi Benson, best known as Ariel in The Little Mermaid (Two-Disc Platinum Edition)) & Roger are moving to the country. Patch accidentally gets left behind, which is just fine with him, as it allows him to go to London and audition for his TV Hero’s show, the Thunderbolt Adventure Hour. When Lars is unable to satisfy Cruella with his art, she decides to go after the Dalmatians again and have Lars use their fur coats as a canvas!

There are some life lessons for the kids as you would expect; Thunderbolt’s (voiced by Barry Bostwick) thirst for fame and vanity are not very admirable traits. Naturally, when he teams up with cute little Patch, he realizes (and hopefully the kids watching will too) that there are more important things in life.

Overall, this film is fine for children, other than some off-camera violence where Cruella knocks out a dog (who eventually wakes up unharmed) and the fact that Cruella actually does smoke in the film. The smoking shouldn’t be a big deal as she is so over the top and nutty that it is obvious that she is not a person to be looked up to or imitated!

The backgrounds and animation style do a very good job of trying to follow the same stylings of the original. Although they lack the amazing artistry of animator Marc Davis & art director Ken Anderson, they are definitely better than most of the TV animation you find today.

This DVD also has some nice extras:

*A 7 minute behind-the-scenes “Dog-umentary,” which is a look at how the movie was made, hosted by a group of dogs who are being given a tour of the Disney Studio. It shows Bostwick, Jason Alexander (voice of Lightning, Thunderbolt’s sidekick), Susanne Blakeslee (Cruella), and Martin Short recording their parts. It’s also interesting to see art director Bill Perkins create the backgrounds and how the unique hand-drawn/xerox style is achieved.

*”Try Again” & “You’re The One” music videos

*3 games: “Patch’s Twilight Adventure” in which the player looks for keys to help free the dalmatians from their cages; “Lost in London” is somewhat of a travelogue of London complete with footage of famous landmarks as players (once again) try to track down the dalmatian puppies; and “Thunderbolt: A Look Inside” lets you tour the canine star’s trailer.

Specs for the movie are Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound with French & Spansih language tracks, and Widescreen (1.66:1). Approximately 71 minutes.

Overall, an enjoyable family film to watch with your children.

This movie isn’t quite up there with Disney classics (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast or even the 1st 101 Dalmatians), but it is really cute and fun. The animation is fine, the story is charming, and my daughter loves it. I recommend this movie for families looking for a “new” movie to enjoy together.

We borrowed this DVD from our local library. I would not recommend paying over $10 (max) for it.

This box set is in fact NOT the official 3 Ninjas Trilogy. The official order of the trilogy is as follows; 3 Ninjas (1992), 3 Ninjas Knuckle Up (shot back to back with the first movie also in 1992 but not released until 1995), and 3 Ninjas Kick Back (1994). This advertised box set includes the three sequels but not the original 3 Ninjas film. Read my separate reviews for each 3 Ninjas movie for more information. I hope this is helpful.

I am a hug fan of the 3 ninjas, I just don’t understand why they would make a “trilogy” of a 4 part movie series. This set contains Kick Back (movie 2), Knuckle Up (movie 3), and High noon at Mega Moutain (movie 4), but some how they neglected the first movie. All on all this is a great set, it is fun to watch them again. For some reason the 3 kids shown on the cover of Knuckle Up aren’t even in the movie, but it is better because this on has the 3 main characters back in there roles from the first movie.

This is my favorite war movie of all time. It feels more like a documentary than a movie. Their depiction of boot camp is as brutal I expect it was 20 years ago. The war scenes are so realistic you will be ducking to dodge the bullets. This entire movie is interesting not a bad part in it. For those of you with little ones at home I warn you this movie has a ton of very foul language in it so you might to watch it after the kids go to sleep.

This stands the test of time well. More than 20 years after its release, there are few better films that demonstrate the horror of war. Whether Kubrick was anti-war I don’t know, however this certainly gives that impression.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Full Metal Jacket! Click Here

Told largely from the point of view of Private ‘Joker’, who once in combat wears a peace symbol (better know in the UK as the CND symbol) on his uniform. I suspect this wouldn’t be allowed….

The first half of the films deals with the new recruits brutal training, and those who aren’t up to the training can only expect humiliation and brutality. Private ‘Pile’ is the example in this film, who suffers greatly and eventually cracks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Full Metal Jacket! Click Here

The second half of the film deals mainly with one platoons attempt to deal with an enemy sniper. Prior to this we are shown the long periods of boredom that soldiers have to deal with. However when the combat comes it is nightmarish in the extreme.

This is all wonderfully filmed by Kubrick, with the training camp scenes and the shattered Vietnam like town near the end being memorable highlights. R Lee Ermey steals the acting honours without actually acting! As Gny Sgt Hartman he is perfectly cast for one very good reason. He served 11 years in the Marine Corps. He totally dehumanises the recruits, which of course you have to do if they are to become good soldiers.

If I had one criticism of the film its that sometimes it was little to clinical in the messages it sent out about the horrors of war - maybe preachy is a better way of saying it. I agree with many of its sentiments, however it might have been a better film without so much of that element.

This doesn’t detract though, from what is still one of the great war movies. Add in the commentary track as a bonus and its easily worth 5 stars.

From Russia With Love, the second James Bond film, is one of the best (in my view, second only to Goldfinger). Unlike the later films in the series, From Russia With Love is extremely faithful to the Ian Fleming novel with only slight variations on the story. In order to obtain a Russian decoding machine, 007 must travel to Istanbul, Turkey to aid a beautiful Russian defector … even though he and the British Secret Service know it’s probably a trap. But unbeknownst to Bond SPECTRE is playing the Russians and the British against each other. This is the most realistic of the Bond films with a story that could probably happen in the real world of espionage. The film does contain a gadget — a trick briefcase (also in the Fleming novel) that contains throwing knives, ammunition, a folding sniper’s rifle, 50 gold sovereigns and a tear gas cartridge that explodes when the case is opened improperly. The film, however, takes a very realistic approach to the story with none of the cartoon antics present in many of the later Bonds.

Buy,Download, Or Stream From Russia With Love! Click Here

Terence Young, who also helmed Dr. No and Thunderball, does an outstanding job of directing. He makes wonderful use of the locations, especially in Istanbul. As with his other two Bond efforts, Young eschews a cartoon approach to the action in favor of a more brutal, realistic approach. And unlike many later Bond directors, Young concentrates on developing characters, making them real people with real emotions. The audience feels for the characters emotionally — something unheard of with the cardboard cutout characters of the later films.

Peter Hunt’s editing is a marvel. The action scenes are tightly edited and the film’s pacing and continuity are flawless. In addition, the DVD documentary shows just how much Hunt helped shape the final project. He went beyond simply editing the film and actually helped shape and improve the story.

Buy,Download, Or Stream From Russia With Love! Click Here

However, the best thing about the film is the casting. Young must have taken great care to properly cast From Russia With Love because every part matches their novel counterpart down to the last detail. Sean Connery, of course, is, and always will be, the best James Bond. Newcomer Daniela Bianchi is terrific as pseudo defector Tatiana Romanova. She is beautiful, sexy and appealing. It’s too bad she didn’t have more of a screen career. Lotte Lenya (Threepenny Opera), the famed German musical star, does a wonderful villainous turn as Rosa Klebb, former SMERSH agent who is now working for SPECTRE. Robert Shaw (A Man for all Seasons, Black Sunday, Jaws) is chilling as SPECTRE assassin Red Grant. And Pedro Armendariz, in the performance of his career, plays Ali Karim Bey, the head of Station T, Turkey. Aremedariz’s performance is especially poignant because he was dying of cancer during the filming. He shot himself while in the hospital soon after he was through filming.

From Russia With Love is not only a good Bond film, but a good film alone, apart from the series. Along with Dr. No and Goldfinger, From Russia With Love represents a high point that the later films never quite matched.

The DVD transfer is spectacular, with terrific sound and picture quality. What makes the DVD special, however, are the special features which include three documentaries, trailers, TV and radio spots and cast & crew profiles. The main documentary is especially interesting as it details how the filmmakers drastically changed the story progression during the shoot. As with all of the Bond DVD’s, MGM has done a superb job, giving the buyer much, much more than just the film to view.

Bonds come and go, but “From Russia With Love” (1963) is a screen classic in its own right. The second 007 adventure makes the most of its increased budget with expansive locales (Turkey, Italy and even Scotland), ruthless villains (memorably portrayed by Robert Shaw and Lotte Lenya) and Sean Connery in terrific form. Terence Young directs this Ian Fleming adaptation with a firm hand. “From Russia With Love” remains Connery’s favorite Bond film . . . and it’s easy to see why.

In the endless mucking about through hundreds of cutesy kids shows a few do come out on top as being innovative, educational, and above all entertaining. The Littles was one of those kinds of shows. While the episodes had a moral to them that moral tends to be shown in a more practical way than your standard “always brush your teeth after each meal… and knowing is half the battle” kind of prachy message. In other words it entertains. As a youngin’ myself I found this show wasn’t condescending to little kids while at the same time engaging them.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Littles - The Complete Series! Click Here

The Littles is based on a widely popular book series and is about a family of little people (very, very little people… think Tom Thumb little) going about their daily adventures in a world of giants (that would mean us regular folk). The animation is surprisingly good with some nice art and nice frame rate compared to other Saturday morning cartoons. Considering this is a show for kids between around 8 and 13 it does get goofy and you do get those silly sound effects every time somebody (or rather Dinky) falls over and the like. Part of the fun is seeing how they use our common small household items as creative inventions for their own environment. That includes anything from basic tools and furniture to airplanes and other vehicles. The cast is a good blend of characters and include:

Tom Little - A 13 yr old with an adventurous streak to him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Littles - The Complete Series! Click Here

Lucy Little - The ten year old sister to Tom who tends to be the sensible one.

Dinky Little - A 21 year old little who pilots the airplane and tends to be the clumsy Gilligan of the group.

Grandpa Little - The brave and somewhat wise one of the bunch that, with the help of Dinky, keeps the kids from getting in over their heads.

William and Lucy Little - They are Tom and Lucy’s parents and don’t really adventure much, but they are there for the kids.

Henry Bigg - If you haven’t guessed by his name this is the normal sized boy that befriends the littles and helps them along.

With this DVD set you get the entire series of half hour 28 episodes (well less than a half hour if you count commercials). Not only do you get all of the episodes but you also get the Weekend Special Feature “Liberty and the Littles”, which is a made for TV special that’s over an hour long. Unlike many cartoon DVDs (or television DVDs for that matter) you also get a host of extras as well. Here is the breakdown:

- Featurette ” Little Ideas for Big People”

- Interview with show writer Marc Scott Zicree

- Storyboard comparisons

- A little snippet on the history of the DIC logo (the show’s production company)

- A host of printable material including series bible, episode storyboards and episode outines.

If you have kids in this age range that have any imaginative flair to them and you want them to learn some good moral and practical lessons without being preached to them this would be a good set for them. Obviously since the show is from the 80’s it won’t have the kind of “newness” you would get from more recent shows, but at the same time these characters are timeless and the show tends to follow that trend.

The Littles Compete series was a ABC series based on the children books. Some of the episodes include the original ABC commercial bumpers and all the episodes include LITTLE IDEAS FOR BIG PEOPLE where kids are show how to make the type of stuff The Littles characters use in that episode. The DVDs are separate containers instead the box so one doesn’t have to worry much about the disks getting loose or scratched during shipping like sometimes happen with the fold out series boxes. Dinky Little is the one who personality changes most between books and show as he is used for comic relief in the TV series with the way he always messes up and get in trouble. The set also include all three versions of the opening theme.

Produced, written and directed by Samuel Fuller, THE NAKED KISS is a little jewel. Constance Towers, in a ” à la Gena Rowlands ” role, gives a performance you won’t forget easily. A great thanks then to Criterion which allows us to rediscover this wonderful movie.

Samuel Fuller, from his 1940 debut in Hollywood until his last movies in France, deserves to be considered as one of the great american directors of the last fifty years. He mainly visited the western, war movies and film noir genres and gave us such masterpieces as FORTY GUNS, SHOCK CORRIDOR and UNDERWORLD, U.S.A. With no big stars but with a style of its own. Raw, violent and provocative, for the eyes and also for the intellect.

THE NAKED KISS is a movie destined to shock the audience. An emotionally ultra-violent first scene prepares us to a journey through Cinderella Land and the Garden of Evil. Samuel Fuller won’t let anybody unharm. The Charming Prince, the Hooker with a heart big as the world, the Cop blasé : everybody will suffer in front of Fuller’s camera.

It’s the third time I watch THE NAKED KISS, the first time on DVD, and I like it even more now. Its atmosphere is one of the strangest you can find on film. Remember Charles Laughton’s NIGHT OF THE HUNTER ? One can feel a bit of this dreamy atmosphere in Fuller’s movie. The child song Constance Towers sings with the handicapped children will give you the chill.

Image is great, a few white spots now and then coming from a non-perfect copy. The sound is good but you’ll have to turn your volume control. Scene access and theatrical trailer as bonus features.

A DVD for your library.

“EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE!” shrieks the trailer to Samuel Fuller’s 1964 B-movie extravaganza “The Naked Kiss,” and you’ll believe that claim eventually even though it initially causes a snicker. Fuller, arguably more than any other American director of the time, helped push Hollywood far beyond the staid, cookie cutter studio productions of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. Here’s a film that is a real envelope pusher, a film that deals with themes that must have absolutely shocked audiences of the 1960s to the core of their being. Heck, “The Naked Kiss” still has the power to shock today, and that’s saying something about a black and white film that is now forty years old. Fuller, who had begun challenging film audiences much earlier with such films as “Pickup on South Street” and “Shock Corridor,” went on to produce, write, and direct other notable films. Before watching “The Naked Kiss,” the only Fuller picture I knew about was his homage to the fighting men of World War II, 1980’s “The Big Red One.” According to information gleaned during several Internet excursions, the French in particular embraced Fuller even as American audiences forgot about him. The recent DVD explosion is sure to rekindle a love for the man’s films on this side of the Atlantic.

We see a good deal of that emotional violence–as well as a dose of physical violence–in the opening scenes of “The Naked Kiss,” as an aging yet still attractive harridan named Kelly (Constance Towers) pummels her pimp senseless with a high-heeled shoe. She’s striking out on her own, taking a sum of money from her now prostrate boss in order to make her escape. Kelly feels that the years of abuse and degradation have rendered her useless and decrepit, and she hopes a new start will restore a modicum of her youthful zest for life. Two years later, we see our heroine stepping off a bus in Grantville, U.S.A., a place that makes “Leave it to Beaver” look like South Central Los Angeles. This town is so saccharine, so picture perfect in that 1950s Hollywood way that you start to wonder exactly where Fuller is taking us. Not to worry. Kelly immediately runs into police detective Griff (Anthony Eisley), a man who hangs around the bus station all day picking up women like Kelly. We also learn that Griff exploits these women by first luring them into a physical encounter before sending them off to a brothel owner named Candy (Virginia Grey). Kelly knows none of this at the start, but she learns quickly after Griff slips her a twenty for the time they spend together. Our woman is appalled at her lapse, so much so that she swears off the life forever and takes up work as a nurse at a local hospital for disabled children.

Things start looking up for Kelly after she takes her new position at the hospital. The hapless souls in her charge buoy her flagging spirits, making her feel as though she’s really contributing something to the world. She also gets the opportunity to help out a few women, Dusty (Karen Conrad) and Buff (Marie Devereux), caught up in similar problems she once faced. But the best aspect of Kelly’s transformation from harridan to hospital hero is the attention she receives from Grant (Michael Dante), Grantville’s primary philanthropist and a beloved figure around town. This guy heaps praise on Kelly, wooing her with his fancy friends, gifts picked up in foreign lands, and his forgiving nature. Even after Grant learns about Kelly’s past, in no small part due to Griff’s interference, he still offers to marry her. Things couldn’t seem better, right? It’s around this point that Fuller drops the cinematic equivalent of a nuclear bomb into the proceedings. Towers’s character discovers a shocking secret concerning Grant and the town’s children, a secret so devastating that she lashes out at her fiancé and accidentally kills him. Her new life shatters as every enemy, and even every friend, she has comes out of the woodwork to excoriate her. It’s only through a few lucky breaks that Kelly clears herself of a murder charge, but she must leave Grantville with her reputation in tatters.

I watched “The Naked Kiss” with my girlfriend, and we had a grand time with Fuller’s seedy film. We roared, guffawed, and giggled through roughly the first hour of the film. How could we not? The dialogue is hilarious, those children singing in the hospital will make you howl with pain, and Kelly’s hard as nails behavior is a real hoot. You simply must love the scene where she charges into the local brothel in order to batter a squawking and squealing Candy into submission. Go get ‘em, Kelly! And that mannequin in her room where she stays after first arriving in Grantville! Oh brother! Yep, “The Naked Kiss” is a real trashy laughfest–until Fuller drops the bomb. When Grant’s true nature comes to light, my girlfriend and I quit laughing in a hurry. From this point until the end of the movie, you could have heard a pin drop in my living room. As the credits roll, it becomes abundantly clear that Fuller made a masterpiece. Any film that can change gears so effectively, essentially turning cinematic conventions of the time on their head in the process, deserves our praise.

The Criterion Collection again performs miracles bringing a screen classic to DVD. The picture quality looks amazing for such an old film. Unfortunately, you’ll need to pick up Criterion’s version of Fuller’s “Pickup on South Street” if you want plenty of extras, as the only bonus included here is the EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE! trailer. “The Naked Kiss” is a must see film, and one that will stay with me for some time. I’m grateful to an online friend who really knows cinema for inspiring me to check this marvelous gem out.

I’ve noticed all of the reviews mainly focus on the season itself and not the essentials of the whether the blu-ray transfer of this season was good or not. So I’ve decided to add my two cents in. And remember everyone we are all entitled to our opinions so feel free to disagree. O.K. First of all I think season 7 was pretty good. I would give it 4 stars overall. It was better than the mess of season 6 and came close to the greatness of season 5. Of course nothing has come close yet to season 2 in my opinion. That was the standard that will be used to measure all action series for years to come. Anyway, yes there were some uneven moments and plot holes this season at times but when you look at the big picture after watching the entire show the writers explained it well enough to satisfy my curiosity. The acting was great as usual with plenty of new characters getting a chance to flex their muscles and of course Jack barking his way through the day as usual. I liked the dialogue between him and agent Renee Walker and how Jack finds some of his humanity in the process by the time the show draws to an end but Renee ends up somewhat losing her’s. Those who have seen the finale know what I mean. And I can’t say enough about Jon Voight. His acting was superb. I felt the show really hit a new gear when he took center stage as the main enemy. And yes there are a few moments where the story will make you scratch your head but in the end the writers do a good job of tying everything up and entertaining you in the process. For example, who cares why Jack is fighting someone when you get to see him kill a guy with a screwdriver through the chest and then use that same screwdriver to start-up a truck. A true classic Jack Bauer moment :) You’ll even get to see Kim become a mini jack near the end. Overall a satisfying season that did more things right than it did wrong.

Now on to the transfer. This is where my 3 star review comes into play. The blu-ray version is only slightly above the standard edition in picture quality in my opinion. On several occasions I noticed grain and bland or washed out colors. The blacks and grays were decent but didn’t have that pop that I know blu-ray can produce. However, on a few scenes the picture quality was noticeable better than at other times. It seemed almost that fox didn’t have their high def cameras working right on some of the episodes. Overall I would give the picture quality between a 7 and 8. The audio also is not quite what I was hoping. The dts master audio mix is a definite step up from dolby digital but for a show like 24 I was surprised that my system didn’t get a better workout than it did. The audio mix is extremely front channel heavy with very little going on with your surrounds. This is a real missed opportunity on the part of fox since something is always going on behind the scenes with each set on 24. I wanted to hear the conversations and computer analysts typing away in the background with fbi headquarters or the grinding of hydraulics in the background as Jack and company stake out the loading docks. I just didn’t hear any of that. And I feel that my ht is a pretty good set up (cost me about $3000) so I know that the mix could have been so much better. As a contrast I just finished watching Taken on blu and that was a audio mix done right. Anyway if I had known the mix would end up being so front channel heavy and the picture quality not popping as much as I had hoped I would have just went with standard def. Of course to each his or her own.

Like most fans, I was disappointed in Season 6, but willing to give 24 another try based on its past greatness. Season 7 surpassed my expectations.

While 24 is an action show, its best moments for me are the pivotal ones in the lives of the characters we care about so much, especially Jack. (Like, in Season 2 Jack talking with Kim while flying the plane, then Mason showing up and talking to Jack about what Jack should really be doing with his life; or, in Season 3, Jack and Nina’s final confrontation; or in Season 5, our last visit with David Palmer.) There are several such memorable moments in Season 7.

This season benefits from a great cast, including some returning favorite characters (Tony, Chloe, Agent Pierce, and a couple others) and some great new ones (FBI Agent Renee Walker, super talented & resourceful and a possible love interest for Jack in Season 8 - if he lives that long), and uber bad guy Jonas Hodges, played to a tee by Jon Voight.

Season 7 borrows the more successful plot elements from previous seasons, and does them well in a new context. Jack, once again, is working on the outside, with the help of Chloe on the inside. Jack, once again, must infiltrate a group of bad guys by pretending to be one of them, and must pretend to kill someone he - and we - care about to convince them of his loyalties. There’s a well-placed mole, feeding intel to the bad guys and keeping them a step ahead of our hero. There’s a Sherrie Palmer-like character in the President’s daughter, and, finally, once again, a President with principles - like David Palmer.

I am hoping the writers try some different plot elements next year instead of rehashing the same formula. Stop making Jack prove he’s a good guy - sheesh, he’s saved the world 6 or 7 times over, you’d think people would have learned by now. Give him some real resources and the unconditional faith of the leaders he serves.

But, after the disappointing Season 6, the writers did a fantastic job, and Season 7 brings the comforting feeling of the old 24 magic. Most fans, I think, will easily forgive the writers for reusing some past plot points. And while not all seasons of 24 portray their villains as 3-dimensional characters with plausible motivations, Season 7 gives us a nicely fleshed out villain in Jonas Hodges, and another guy who’s pretty bad reveals his true motivations to Jack in Episode 24, and it’s pretty plausible and satisfying.

In the end, despite the terrorist threats to the nation, and all the great action and stunts and car crashes, Season 7 is more intimate - it’s about Jack facing his demons and about other characters we’ve long known dealing with theirs. And as a bonus (I hope this isn’t too much of a spoiler), Kim’s reappearance sets things right with fans - she doesn’t wind up in any cougar traps - far from it - and she makes a positive contribution when it counts most. In my view, everything wraps up perfectly in Episode 24. The writers don’t explicitly show the actual resolution to certain things, like what Renee is about to do when we last see her, or what will happen after the very final scene. But they show enough to make it clear how things turn out. And it is very satisfying.

If you have not seen 24 Season 7 yet, I envy you for the treat you’re in store for.

You will not be dissappointed! all the Rock and Learn DVD’s are amazing! I have them all and my 3 year old has learned so much. I am thrilled with all of these videos, they are very colorful, fun, the quality is great. I love it that they make it a point to teach both upper case and lower case letters, this is so important because when a toddler is starting to learn the alphabet, this could be confusing because some DVD’s will only teach the alphabet in upper case, which makes it confusing once they are introduced to lower case. These dvd’s are worth every penny!

I recently purchased this Rock N Learn Alphabet DVD Rock ‘N Learn: Alphabet, it is truly fantabulous (my word)!!! I bought it along with the Rock N Learn Letter Sounds Rock ‘N Learn: Letter Sounds, the Rock N Learn Colour, Shapes & Counting Rock ‘N Learn: Colors, Shapes & Counting, and the Rock N Learn Phonics Easy Reader Rock ‘N Learn: Phonics Easy Readers. My son is 4 years old and diagnosed with speech delay (which after these DVDs could now be argued against because regular developing chldren and even adult strangers can now easily understand him). I bought the DVDs and received them around 3 weeks ago. He LOVES them. He asks for them by name ‘I want Alphabet Al, Mommy.’ His other favorite is Letter Sounds (my personal favorite). He has known his alphabets since 2 and able to count to 10 since 2. He already counts up to (and recognizes) numbers up to 40 (since around 6 months ago). However, with these DVDs he has learned the sounds that each letter makes, which he did not previously know or even understand the concept. Now when he hears a certain word, for instance yesterday he heard us say ‘fun’, he repeated it and said ‘fff, fff…F’. My husband had him sound out the word ‘dog’, and he got the ‘d-o’…we are on our way! The biggest change with him is that he doesn’t appear to be speech delayed anymore. He is speaking in sentences up to 10 words. He can spell ‘CAT’, and he spells and writes his name (very legibly). This happened within a week of starting to listen to thesee DVDs. By the way, the ‘Phonics’ DVD is way too advance for him at this stage. That said, with how much he’s learning, he may be ready for the ‘Phonics’ video in 6 months or so. By the way, I just ordered the Rock N Learn ‘Getting ready for Kindergarten’ Rock ‘N Learn: Getting Ready for Kindergarten, ‘Alphabet Exercise’Alphabet Exercise DVD, and ‘Nursery Rhymes’ Rock ‘N Learn: Nursery Rhymesthis morning. I can’t wait for them to get to him. (I’ll write a review once we receive them and he’s had a chance to view them) He is soooo excited by this series of DVDs. We spend time watching the DVDs with him (fun for adults also - songs are catchy), but can leave him to watch these DVDs guilt free as well. THE ROCK N LEARN SERIES ARE THE BEST EDUCATIONAL PRODUCT WE HAVE EVER BOUGHT FOR OUR SON & HE HAS SO MUCH FUN WITH THEM. Buy this series for your family, friends, and your children’s teachers. I’ll be buying a set for my son’s pre-school and another for his kindergarten (he’ll start kindergarten next September). If you visit the Rock N Learn website, you will get a breakdown of the age appropriateness of each DVD. They have various DVDs from 2 - 10 years old. I can’t say enough about these products except ‘THANK YOU SO MUCH’ to the makers of this product.
